France has officially booked its spot in the 2024 European Championship in Germany. Their 2-1 triumph (1-0) against the Netherlands in Amsterdam has solidified the Equipe Tricolore’s position in the top two spots of qualifying Group B. Kylian Mbappé was the hero of the match, netting both goals for France (7th and 53rd minute). The late goal by debutant Quilindschy Hartman for Oranje in the 83rd minute was too little, too late.
Mbappé equaled the great Michel Platini with his 41st international goal – and surpassed the 1984 European champion a little later with his second goal of the evening.
Mbappé is now France’s fourth most prolific goalscorer, with Olivier Giroud (54th) at the top.
The injury-plagued Dutch, who last missed a European Championship in 2016, only held their own in phases against the runners-up and had nothing to counter Mbappé’s top class.
The Paris St. Germain superstar took his first chance to take the lead, then scored beautifully at the start of the second half after a one-two with Adrien Rabiot.
GROUP B: NETHERLANDS SLIP TO THIRD PLACE
On the other side, the Dutch were jubilant when Donyell Malen’s goal (55th minute) was disallowed for offside.
The Netherlands slipped to third place in Group B as a result of the defeat, three points behind second-placed Greece.
The Netherlands will face off in Athens on Monday.
EM QUALIFICATION: AUSTRIA FAILS TO TAKE FIRST CHANCE, BELGIUM IN
Meanwhile, Austria’s national team failed to take its first match point for a ticket to the European Championship – and had to watch double-pointer Dodi Lukebakio celebrate at its own stadium.
Coach Ralf Rangnick’s team lost 2:3 (0:1) against Belgium, who in turn made the qualification for the 2024 European Championship in Germany perfect.
At Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, everything was set for the Austrians’ big party – even the absence of injured regulars David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic should not be an obstacle. But former Bundesliga pro Lukebakio (12th) put a damper on things early on.
NEXT CHANCE FOR AUSTRIA IN AZERBAIJAN
After the break, Lukebakio struck again for the team of German coach Domenico Tedesco (55th,), then Romelu Lukaku increased (58th).
Austria came back, though: first Bayern Munich’s Konrad Laimer (73rd), then Dortmund’s Marcel Sabitzer brought Rangnick’s team close to a point via a handball penalty (84th). Belgium’s Amadou Onana saw a yellow card in the meantime (78th).
Nevertheless, Rangnick’s team still has a good chance of qualifying: Austria can punch its ticket with a win in Azerbaijan on Monday, and Belgium can also provide shooting assistance in the evening match against Sweden.
RONALDO SCORES TWICE: PORTUGAL HOLDS ITS OWN
Portugal also removed the last doubts on Friday evening. Double hero Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. held on to their match point in a 3-2 (2-0) win over Slovakia in Porto. It was the seventh victory in the seventh game for the Iberians.
Ronaldo (29th) converted a hand penalty to make it 2-0 in the meantime, Goncalo Ramos (18th) had given the 2016 European champions the lead.
David Hancko’s first goal in the current qualifying campaign in the 69th minute was comfortably absorbed by Portugal, thanks to Ronaldo, who struck back in the 72nd minute. Nevertheless, Stanislav Lobotka injected excitement back into the match with his goal in the 80th minute.
